Devon Smith began his study of Hakkoryu under Garner Train in 1979. He operates Hakkoryu Kenshinkan Dojo 八光流健心館道場 (Strong/Healthy, Spirit/Heart House School) in Clinton Township, Michigan, USA.

Mr. Smith also oversees studies at Hakkoryu Matsukan Dojo in Ontario, Canada, Hakkoryu Shinwakan Dojo in Indiana, USA, and Hakkoryu Ryuseikan Dojo in Missouri, USA.

He is also one of a few who have received a unique and unusual honor from Nidai Soke Okuyama, a certificate bestowing Hachidan (8th level or grade) reserved for those who have demonstrated exemplary dedication and hard work over the years toward the support of Hakkoryu.
