Joseph Stricker began his study of Hakkoryu under Garner Train in 1985. He operates Hakkoryu Senshinkan Dojo 八光流洗心館道場 (Pure Heart House School) in Saginaw and Bay City, Michigan, USA.

On 11 June 2017, he received a unique and unusual honor from Waka-sensei Takashi Okuyama, a certificate bestowing nanadan (7th level or grade) reserved for those who have demonstrated exemplary dedication and hard work over the years toward the support of Hakkoryu.
