John Cole, Seizan
Kaiden Shihan Sandaikichu
John began his study of Hakkoryu in 1994 under Kaiden Shihan Sandaikichu Ralph Verde while living in Los Angeles, California.
He now lives in Austin, Texas and operates the Hakkoryu Fudōshin Dojo. Fudōshin (不動心) is a state of equanimity or imperturbability (literally and metaphorically, “immovable mind”, “immovable heart” or “unmoving heart”). It is a philosophical or mental dimension to Japanese martial arts which contributes to the effectiveness of the advanced practitioner.
On 3 August 2014, he was one of a few who received a unique and unusual honor from Nidai Soke Okuyama, a certificate bestowing Nanadan (7th level or grade) reserved for those who have demonstrated exemplary dedication and hard work over the years toward the support of Hakkoryu.
